Aurora Lady

Cathedral of Rebellion by Aurora Lady

I love reading the Agent Lover blog, and they featured a lovely interview with LA artist Aurora Lady. They asked her if she has any advice for aspiring lady artists, and she gave an awesome reply:

Eliminate the static! Find a job that allows you to showcase and use your talents, and if you don’t have that job yet, create it. Don’t waste time on people who are dream killers—seriously, break off all ties from them and get the hell out. Be ruthless and use every moment to work on your art—even if you are working a desk job, have notepads next to you so you can write down every idea, and listen to podcasts that inspire you while you are pushing papers. Wake up an hour early to draw before your commute. Use your sketchbook at lunch and take notes on everything.  Talk to EVERYONE about what you are passionate about, and don’t limit your social circle to other artists! Your vision is needed and there is room for every sort of perspective. Look for opportunities to help others—ask what their passions are and connect people. Most of all, just keep going and don’t get discouraged. I mean that. It’s really, really easy to say I’m never going to get anywhere with this, and stop. That’s a sad way to live. If I had given up, I’d still be living in a podunk town, wishing I had had the guts to go balls to the wall and make money off my art.

You can read the rest of the interview here.

Six Years Later

Embossed and varnished cover - so nice!

Two of my illustrations are featured in Issue 2 of Six Years Later Magazine. I created Cross My Heart and Truth, Love, Beauty as separate illustrations but it was great to see them together as a spread, as the oval shapes were nicely symmetrical.

There are loads of creative individuals featured, so if you're in the need for some inspiration you can purchase issue 2 of 6YL here.

Curvy Book 8

My Frankettes illustration is featured in Curvy Book 8! It's super cool to be in the book as Curvy has spent nearly a decade uncovering the world’s most creative female illustrators and artists. There's a ton of amazing artists in the book - I posted a few of my faves below...

Lower Dens poster

Here is the second project I have completed as part of my Jump mentorship. My brief was to design a poster for the band Lower Dens with a focus on abstract imagery. I usually like to draw people, so this was a great project for me to focus on typography and textures. Creating the 3D typography was much easier than I thought it would be - all I can say is that the 3D tool in Illustrator is the boss!

Lana Del Rey poster

I can finally reveal the rest of my illustration, after the sneaky peek of the eyes I posted earlier this week. I love Lana Del Rey's music, when I first heard her album Born to Die I was blown away and listened to it repeatedly.

This is my entry into a competition to design a concert poster for Lana's three night performance dates at the El Rey Theatre. Lana has a sort of vintage Hollywood glamour, so I wanted to evoke a 1950s silver screen siren feel to it. A lot of things (good and bad) have been written about her on the web, Twitter, etc, but in the 1950s newspapers were the main medium for tabloid scoops of famous figures. This led me to create the background with a newspaper feel of headlines taken from her lyrics.

I always like to push myself and try new things, and with this poster I had a go at adding some texture and grit to it.

Gritty texture to achieve a newspaper feel
And as with all projects, I started off with research and creating a mood board of pics.
